These are good first steps, but we have so, so much work still to do to become a fully sustainable company. That was my thought as I arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, for the 27th annual U.N. climate conference, or COP27. Held in November 2022 and dubbed the Climate Implementation Summit , the event gathered leaders from the public, nonprofit and private sectors - the global sustainability community - to debate, celebrate and negotiate global climate action. Going in, "implement" was the word top of mind as leaders were expected to follow up on ambitious goals set the year before in Glasgow, Scotland. By day eight, however, the word on my mind was "mired." As in: Are we, collectively, moving fast enough? This year''s event had its high points - President Joe Biden''s address to world leaders , in which he affirmed the United States'' commitment to a low-carbon future, was certainly one.

Silicon Valley VC Keith Rabois says mass layoffs are due to hiring becoming a vanity metric in tech. Rabois told an Evercore-hosted event that firms like Meta over-hired by thousands of staff. "There''s nothing for these people to do … It''s all fake work," Rabois said. Thousands of tech staffers at Meta and Google do "fake work" and were brought on to fulfill the "vanity metric" of hiring, according to outspoken investor and tech veteran Keith Rabois. Rabois is chief executive of OpenStore, which finances merchants selling with Shopify, and a general partner at venture capital firm Founders Fund. He is also known as one of the "PayPal Mafia", having worked as an executive at the payments firm in the early 2000s. Speaking remotely from Miami at an event hosted by banking firm Evercore, he called out major tech firms for over-hiring and said the sector''s current mass shedding of jobs to rein in costs was overdue. "All these people were extraneous, this has been true for a long time, the vanity metric of hiring employees was this false god in some ways," he said.

The company is focused on growth over profits, which is a problem considering growth is slowing.
